LUTZ Extends Her Lead
Optimist World Championship 2005
Lake Silvaplana, Engadin, Switzerland
Tina LUTZ (GER) holds a commanding 14 points lead at the top of the Optimist World Championship leaderboard going into today's final races on Lake Silvaplana, Switzerland.
In both of yesterday's races she significantly outperformed her two nearest rivals, Matthew SCOTT (TRI) and Jianan WU (CHN), and holds far better discard results than the pair meaning victory is well within her grasp tomorrow. If LUTZ can keeps things together she will be the first girl medallist since Lisa WESTERHOF (NED) won gold in 1996.
Yesterday's races were held in a cold northerly of ten to twelve knots with the Race Committee feeling that only two races were appropriate. Finishes of 11 (discarded) and 2 for LUTZ dwarfed the 31,5 recorded by SCOTT and the 82,12 by WU. Philipp AUTENRIETH (GER) was the star of the day with a bullet and a second place moving him from eighth to fourth on the leaderboard and within one point of the podium positions.
