Portsmouth, RI, USA

US SAILING has announced the members of the US Youth World Team which will represent the USA at the 2005 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship.
The championship will be sailed from 14-23 July in Busan, Korea, and is open to athletes who are under the age of 19 on 31 December 2005. Racing will take place on Suyong Bay in the region of East Busan where the 1988 Olympic Regatta was held.

The US Youth World Team members qualified after winning a selection regatta previously determined to be a qualifying event. The members of the team are as follows and will compete in the following events:

  • Single-handed dinghy boys - Laser
    Royce WEBER
  • Single-handed dinghy girls - Laser Radial
    Paige RAILEY
  • Double-handed dinghy boys - 420
    Adam ROBERTS and Nick MARTIN
  • Double-handed dinghy girls - 420
    Megan MAGILL and Briana PROVANCHA
  • Multihull open - Hobie 16
    TJ TULLO and Jerry TULLO

Paige RAILEY is the only team member who has already represented the USA at an ISAF Youth World Championship and this will be her fourth appearance - an incredible achievement. Railey's first Youth Worlds was in 2002 when she picked up a bronze medal sailing a Byte, in 2003 she improved on that and won the gold medal in the Laser Radial but in 2004 finished a disappointing seventh in the same class. With the selection of the Laser Radial as the women's single-handed equipment for Beijing, Railey is also competing on the senior circuit and at the first release of the rankings for the class she came out equal first after victory at the ISAF Grade 1 Rolex Miami OCR. She is now ranked at seven.

The seven athletes of the 2005 US Youth World Team will be accompanied by US SAILING's Youth Development Coach Mike KALIN (Cambridge, Mass.).

With the dedicated support of sponsors Rolex Watch USA, Nautica, Vanguard Sailboats, Zodiac of North America, Sperry Top-Sider, New England Ropes, Team McLube and Vineyard Vines, team-members will travel to Korea in mid-July.
