The Danish Team for 2011 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships in Zadar, Croatia has been announced after a challenging three day regatta hosted by Sonderborg Yacht Club in the southern part of Denmark.
After two days of very light and medium winds and the third day with light wind as well as thunderstorms, the team is has a blend of experienced and new sailors.
In the 29er
Marie Thusgaard Olsen now crewing for
Mads Emil Lübeck has seniority over most others. The
ISAF Youth Worlds in Zadar will be her fourth after she sailed the 29er in
Aarhus, Denmark in 2008 and
Buzios, Brazil in 2009. She came 22nd in the 420 at the 2010 edition in
Istanbul, Turkey last year but she returns to the 29er with Lübeck who, up until now, has helmed successfully for older brother Christian in the 29er.
In the SL16
Nicolaj Bjørnholt and
Daniel Bjørnholt will compete in their third ISAF Youth Worlds. The twin brothers have competed in the ISAF Youth Worlds twice. Their silver medal from Istanbul, Turkey in 2010 was their first podium finish after their ninth place in 2009 in Buzios, Brazil.
Sebastian Fleischer on the RS:X is also taking part for the third time. He finished 18th in 2009 and 13th in 2010.
The brand new 420 boys' team with
Balder Tobiasen and
Magnus Jung sailed at the Youth Worlds for the first time in 2010 and finished a very respectable 15th position. They will be looking to improve in Zadar.
Anne Line Lyngsø and Lærke Lokdam in the 420 girls are former Europe sailors. They have teamed up in their new 420 and will be sail in their first ISAF Youth Worlds.
In the girls Laser Radial
Celine Carlsen managed to qualify by just one point. It is the first time she takes part at an ISAF Worlds. She recently changed to the Laser Radial after an intense couple of seasons in the in the Byte CII class where she holds a fourth place at both the Byte CII World Championship and the inaugural
Youth Olympic Games in Singapore last year.
Christian Guldberg Rost, also a newcomer, will sail in the boys Laser Radial. From the Optimist he headed straight into the Laser 4.7 and the Laser Radial. He sailed very convincingly during the qualifications and managed to stay one point ahead of his nearest opponent - last year's ISAF Youth Worlds competitor
Stig Steinfurth.
On the ISAF Youth Worlds selection, Danish national youth coordinator Jan Christiansen said, "For the Danish team it is equally important to win medals and to gain experience and develop further. The ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship is an excellent tool for this."
