'Women And Sport' Trophy Awarded

Gianna ANGELOPOULOS-DASKALAKI has been awarded the IOC's 'Women and Sport' Trophy 2005. She received the trophy yesterday on International Women's Day.
ANGELOPOULOS-DASKALAKI was the president of the Organizing Committee for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The IOC awarded the trophy for the passion and effort ANGELOPOULOS-DASKALAKI had invested in the success of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. They were also keen to point out that women's participation in Athens broke the 40% mark for the first time.

The award winner is choosen by the IOC Women and Sport Commission from candidates submitted by National Olympic Committees and International Olympic Sports Federations like ISAF. Five other continental trophies were awarded on the night to women from Burkina Faso, Israel, the USA, Singapore and Australia.

ISAF Vice President Novi CEPPELLINI (ITA) won the inaugural European Women in Sport Trophy in 2000 for her work to introduce more women's events into the Olympic sailing programme and her efforts to organize the first ISAF Women's World Match Racing Championships in 1999.
