The 2004 Snipe National Championship sponsored by Acorida and Carrabba's Italian Grill came to a close yesterday with Ernest RODRIQUES and his crew Leandro SPINA claiming the title of US Snipe National Champion.
Ernest and Leandro were able to stay close to George SZABO and Brian JANNEY and not get any boats in between them on the first and only race that was scored yesterday. This gave them a 3.25 point lead going into the second scheduled race for the day.
The Race Committee tried to get a second race off but the wind didn't cooperate and shifted 180 degrees from the North to straight out of the south as the Heinzerling fleet attempted to round the marks for the last beat to the finish. The race committee had no choice but to abandon the race and try to start another. Unfortunately the breeze didn't hold up and the race committee had to abandon racing for the day which eliminated the throwout for the Heinzerling series.
The winner of the Wells series was Gonzalo DIAZ Sr. and his crew Kristi PATTERSON. If the name Diaz sounds familiar, it won't surprise you to hear that this is Augie DIAZ'S dad. "Old Man" Diaz who is in his 80's still has what it takes to compete at a national level in a tough one design fleet and he is considered one of the best downwind sailors racing in the Snipe Class today.
A special thanks to all of the sponsors including Acordia, Carrabba's Italian Grill, S3 Technologies, Quantum Sails and North Sails for all their support.
