172 sailors from 14 countries participated in the 2005 Optimist South American Championship at the C.N. San Isidro in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Joe Diego REYES (MEX) dominated to finish the championship 23 points ahead of second placed Alexander ZIMMERMAN (PER). Reyes finished in the top three in eight races of the twelve race series and his result is the more remarkable as he is a lake sailor competing in the difficult currents on the River Plate.
Behind him the top three Peruvians battled it out for the South American medals with silver going to the latest star of the Zimmermann clan, Alexander. Alberto FERNANDINI (PER) took the bronze and Alex TORRES (PER) finished fourth on countback. Maria CUCALON (Ecuador) took the girls' prize in fifth place and was followed by the two Argentinian-trained Malaysian visitors in sixth and seventh.
Earlier the Team Racing Championship had seen Peru take gold and bronze with Ecuador in second place.
