Koh Samui Regatta
Chaweng Beach

The first day dawned cloudy and the fresh winds of the past four days had abated under a cloudy sky - it seems a small depression was lying over the Kra Peninsula.
But after much hurried activity on Chaweng Beach and under a freshening breeze, the QBE Insurance Race - the first of the third Koh Samui Regatta got under way in an 8-10 knot freshening westerly with the start gun firing bang on time at 10.25.

Race officer Mark PRYKE chose a short coastal course to allow all the yachts an easy first day and a chance for many of the visiting boats to assess equipment after most had received a bit of a beating on the delivery trip, especially those heading down from Hong Kong. One such case was Intrigue of Stornoway which suffered serious engine damage and was in two minds whether to compete or head on further for engine repairs.

But the opening party at Zico's Brazilian Grill & Bar must have got skipper Ian NICHOLSON and his crew into the "Samui Spirit" and they elected to stay and have some fun after a hard slog down.

The 20-mile course took the boats from Chaweng Bay, north across the channel and around the small island out crop of Ko Kong Rin, less than a few hundred metres off the south east corner of Koh Phangan - to produce some great photo opportunities for the visiting members of the international media.

As the breeze freshened to a 15 knot westerly in the channel most of the yachts settled in and a good race ensued.

It was a good day for the Thai boats taking first place (provisional) in four out of the five classes, with three of these skippered by Thais.
