American boats lead the way after day one of racing in the Barcardi Cup. Last year's Portugese winners are well placed in fifth.

SANTOS (POR) finished the first day of the six-day Bacardi Cup Regatta in fifth place. Howie SHIEBLER of California and crew Anson STOOKEY took first place followed by Floridians Mark
MENDELBLATT and crew Mark STRUBE in second place. Two-time Bacardi champion Peter
BROMBY (BER) finished third with crew Rick PETERS and six-time Bacardi Cup winner Vince BRUN of California and crew Doug BROPHY took fourth place.
DOMINGOS held third position from the start through the third turn and then lost downwind to push him into fifth place. BROMBY was at the middle of the pack after the start and according to PETERS, they made huge gains: 'we went flying downwind after the first turn and we passed almost 20 boats.'
One thing noticeable in today's race were the number of boats displaying a large 'Z' on their sails as a tribute to long-time Star Class sailor Frank ZAGARINO of Miami who died yesterday.
