More than 600 young Optimist sailors gathered in Garda, Italy this weekend but like most of the regattas in Europe, racing was affected by a lack of wind.

By Saturday night, only a single race had been completed on Lake Garda due to light wind and fog but heroic efforts by the Race Committee on Sunday enabled the fleet to sail three races. The overall results suggest that the finishing order was far from random as half of the top twelve were members of last year's national teams, including Tina LUTZ (GER), first girl in 2004, finishing fourth overall.

On Sunday, the strong Ora wind finally blew on Lake Garda and on the water by 10:30 the Race Committee was able to run two races for the A Division (Cadets) and three for the B Division (Juniors).

It was a great weekend for the Italian sailors in A Division as they took the top seven slots. First overall was Massumo ATTINA, thirteen points clear of Marco BENNI in second and Francesco PAPA in third. First girl was Carlotta OMARI who finished sixth. The first non-Italian was Sofie PETERSEN from Denmark who was also the second girl.

In the B Division a few more nations got a look in to the top ten but it was an Italian one-two for Martino TORTAROLO and Federico MACCARI. Fabian KASKE took the final podium spot for Germany and was followed by his team mate Tina LUTZ in fourth, who was also first girl.
