Olympic 49er sailor Tom FITZPATRICK from Howth Yacht Club set a new Irish record today when he won the Allianz Irish Helmsmans' title in a blistering five race final at Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club on Belfast Lough.
With three previous wins to his name, Fitzpatrick added his name to the trophy for a fourth time in a final which came right down to the wire. Crewed by Killian COLLINS, he decisively clinched the title with an easy win in the last race.
Racing was action packed in winds which lightened only briefly during the day's racing, with the seniors in the Squib fleet suffering some gear damage. The Juniors and Girls in the Firefly dinghies emerged relatively unscathed.
Runner up to Fitzpatrick was the local Squib sailor Simon Brien of the host club, who despite starting Sunday's racing with a first in the first race, failed to hold off Fitzpatrick's constant challenge.
In the Junior event the Laser Radial European Youth champion, George KINGSTON from Royal Cork and Kinsale Yacht Clubs, dominated the eleven strong fleet, winning two of the five races in the final.
Another Royal Cork sailor, Katie Tingle, shone in the Ladies event with four first places in five races, winning by a comfortable margin. Full results are available on the ISA Website at the address below.
