Goodison Wins Selection To Team GBR Athens 2004
Paul GOODISON put in a remarkable effort to win the RYA UK Olympic Trials 2004 and yesterday was named by the British Olympic Association (BOA) as the eighteenth and final member of the sailing squad for Team GBR Athens 2004.
The RYA UK Olympic Trials took place from the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy and Paul GOODISON, who is currently ranked number three on the ISAF World Rankings, won six out of the eleven races sailed to win the event by nineteen points from nearest rival Ed Wright.
Whilst the battle was going on for the Olympic place, an equally fierce battle was underway in the youth fleet for the chance to represent Great Britain at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship 2004. Nick THOMPSON sailed a great last day, winning race ten and scoring a third and a fifth in the other two races to finish fifth overall.
Stuart CHILDERLEY, a past youth worlds gold medallist and top yachtsman, was the selector for the Laser class and was delighted to announce Thompson's place in the team for Poland this summer.
Both winning sailors will now go on to compete at the Laser World Championships which take place in Turkey from the 10-18 May. The Laser World Championships is also the final Olympic Qualification Regatta for the 2004 Olympic Games.
