The RYA has launched a "Volunteering Website, as a joint project between the RYA and Southampton Institute.
The idea came about as a result of Sport England's Step into Sport Project and an on going commitment by The Department of Culture Media and Sport to introduce more professional working practices into the world of sports volunteering.
The site identifies, and covers in detail, the essential four 'R's of volunteering. These are the Recruitment, Retaining, Recognition and Reward of volunteers.
The project has been a year and a half in the making and the website contains hundreds of useful documents that the user can collect in a personal library whilst surfing the site to print or download later. To raise awareness of the project Southampton Institute's research team of Jenny ANDERSON, Debbie HODGES and Tim SAVILL travelled to all the 13 RYA regions and home Countries to run volunteer launch seminars jointly with regional committees.
Jenny ANDERSON said: "We were very proud to have been invited to join the RYA in developing their Vounteer Support Strategy. This is one of the biggest consultancies we have undertaken and the concept is similar to work on Project Oarsome for the Amateur Rowing Association in 2000."
Victoria SYMMERS, the RYA's Training Development officer said: "With many examples of good and effective practices in relation to volunteer management, anybody with the responsibility of looking after a club's volunteer strategy should look at this site".
