Warnemunde Week

On the last day of the Laser Europa Cup Mathias RIECK from Warnemuende demonstrated his strength and achieved two firsts yesterday to make it up the score board to third place in the end.
"It was my day, and I liked the conditions: strong winds and big waves. I was clearly in front in both races", he said all smiles, just before the beginning of the prize giving.

In prospect of his Olympic nomination, this could have been another important step in the right direction. The final decision on this will be taken on 19 July.

Happy all the same was Vize-Europa Cup winner Alexander SCHLONSKI (GER). He defended his second place with a third and a second in the last races.

"It was tiring and the conditions where hard, physical fitness was important today", he said after the happy ending.

Gareth BLANCKENBERG from South Africa did not have to sail the last two races and left for Greece yesterday - he was already unreachable in front and is now winner of the Laser Europa Cup Warnemuende. For the Laser European Championship from July 16. to 24. he will be back in Warnemuende.

In the Laser Radial class the winners name is Jean Baptiste BERNAZ (FRA), and Rodie van MACKELENBERGH (NED) finished second.

The Dyas class was dominated by Sueße/Bender who led the fleet all the way.

The 74 participants in the long distance race around Bornholm have been in everyone's mind despite being absent on the water. The big question is: Will the EX-Illbruck ("MAC") be able to break the record, set by "UCA" in 2001? The VO60 had to sail into the finish before 23.17 hours on Tuesday evening to break the 28 h, 37 min, 23 sec record.

"If the wind doesn't die down, they could arrive around 21.00 ", race officer Iris Gross said yesterday. As soon as we have news from this we will bring it to you.
