The World Sailing Speed Record Council have today announced the ratification of the "Round Britain and Ireland, all islands, non stop singlehanded" record.
On Tuesday 8 June at 19:31:48 BST Belgian skipper Michel KLEINJANS crossed the finish line off Ramsgate of his single-handed round Britain and Ireland record attempt. The record now stands as:
Yacht: 'Roaring Forty' 40 ft Monohull
Sailed by: Michel KLEINJANS. Belgian
Dates: 28th May 200.to 8th June 2004.
Elapsed Time: 11days 12hours 26minutes 48seconds
Average speed: 6.47kts
The former record, set in 2000 by Peter KEIG (GBR) on board his 38 foot Zeal was 18d 13hr 59m 59sec has been reduced by more than seven days but due to the poor conditions Kleinjans encountered he remains sure that a time well under ten days is possible.
