IMS Mediterranean Championship
Cres

The first day of racing for the 44 boats and crews competing in Croatia took place yesterday in a 12-15 knot breeze that enabled two races to be completed.
At the end of racing yesterday the fleet was being led by Giorgio GOLDINI'S (ESP) owner/driven Rodman 42 "Sixty Group", who with a first and a second comfortably led from local Croatian X-43 "Caruba", owned by Vladimir GOLENIC (CRO). Their third and fifth place finish saw them sitting five points behind the Spanish boat after day one.

Race one was started in a slightly stronger breeze than the average for the day and resulted in a general recall for the fleet. Getting away on the second start, only a couple of boats were scored OCS in a highly close and competitive fleet. "Sixty Group" took the gun, followed closely by the IMX 45 of Filippo TOGNANA (ITA), "Umana", who lies in third place overall after a ninth in race two.

The second race was slightly lighter than the first and the fleet got away at the first attempt with no recalls and a clear start. The lighter breezes caused a bit of a turnaround in the fortunes of some, or maybe starting the right side of the line improved Nadir SPEZZAPRIA (ITA) and his crew aboard the X 46 "Il Colore Del Vento", who went on to win race two after an OCS in race one.

Spezzapria currently lies in a lowly 23 position in the fleet but it is early days yet. After the worst possible start to a championship they have the opportunity to make good any first day problems. This morning saw the start of the first offshore race of the championship, which is due to finish on 26 June.
