Goals:

My experience in the sport of sailing goes back to the time I started sailing in Optimist, in 1973, however, it is my latter experience in the field of sailing administration which I can put at the service of the sailing community. This experience has allowed me to face and work with the diversity represented in our sport and, with that background, I am convinced I can contribute to the development of Sailing from the position of Vice-President.

The future of our sport depends largely on Sailing remaining in the Olympic programme, and because of that, we need to make a big effort in ensuring that permanency. However, there is a lot more work to be done in other aspects. Here is a short list.

Most of the activity held in our clubs around the world is non-Olympic sailing, so we need to develop new strategies to promote all types and disciplines of racing.

Regional Games. They can be used as splendid platforms for marketing our sport, showing the other sports what sailing is about. The more the other sports know about sailing, the greater possibilities to be seen as one more within the group.

Emerging Nations Program. It has been proved a big success and it should continue evolving in order to provide those emerging nations with a basic structure which will give them the autonomy to develop their own schemes.

National Authorities. There are some MNAs that, for different reasons, are closer to World Sailing than others. Sometimes the problem is the language or it may be that they cannot find the appropriate channel to get through. The board should be sensitive to this situation in order to facilitate the communication between World Sailing and these MNAs.

Race officials. They are the faces of World Sailing around the world and a big force representing it at each different event. We need to provide them with policies and guidelines to help them maintain the same standard in their decisions around the world. Consistency in the way our race officials work will eventually benefit competitors, who will not be surprised by different methods in different events. These policies and guidelines have been very useful in Olympic classes events and the SWC and it is time to spread them to all other kind of events.

Olympic Regatta. We need to look for new and more challenging formats. We have to find how that regatta in particular can transmit the Olympic drama and become a real attraction. We should be ready to discuss these topics without limiting ourselves with how this has been done up to now and understand that, in order to attract the world's attention as other sports do, we might have to consider the formats, courses and scoring systems from a zero base.

On the other hand, we need to clearly separate the requirements of the Olympic regatta from the rest of sailing, and encourage those not involved in the Games to keep on developing their own competitions in accordance with their own requirements.

Women in Sailing. In the past, World Sailing and the IOC showed a genuine concern about the lack of women in relevant positions in the sport of Sailing. A great effort was made and the result is that, not only the number of women in World Sailing committees has increased, but also the quality of their work and the level of their commitment have also increased their confidence. We need to keep on working in that direction to identify those women whose contribution to Sailing we shouldn't let off.

The next four years will be years of changes and challenges and I am looking forward to contributing with my time and effort.

Sailing Career

I competed in Optimist Europe, Snipe and Offshore racing. I did not get any significant achievement in my sailing career at international level, however, it was extensive and good enough to raise a desire of remaining active in the sport of sailing in other areas such as sport administration, education and race management, judging and umpiring.
