Canada's Peter Wickwire and his crew of Matt Christie and Tim Bishop comprehensively won the ISAF Nations Cup North American / Caribbean Regional Final at Fort Worth, Texas, USA over the weekend.
The Canadian trio, who have an ISAF World Match Race Ranking position of #75, defeated
Colin Rathbun,
Christopher Haycraft and Antony Wighting, from the British Virgin Islands, 3-0 in the Final.
Wickwire and his team came through the Round Robins relatively unscathed winning nine out of ten match races against the British Virgin Islands team and
Mauricio Gallardo,
Jorge Guevara and
Humberto Zepeda from El Salvador.
The Canadian teams only defeat came in the fifth Round Robin against Rathbun, who looked to take some momentum into the final having already qualified after beating the El Salvadorian team.
But Rathbun's win counted for nothing as Wickwire used his experience and brushed the British Virgin Islands team aside with relative ease to qualify for the Grand Final.
The ISAF Nations Cup is a global competition to find the world's top match racing nations in both open and women's events and to develop match racing infrastructure around the world. The Nations Cup encompasses a series of eight Regional Finals from March to July 2011, from which the top team will qualify for the ISAF Nations Cup Grand Final, which will take place in Sheboygan, USA from 13-18 September 2011.
