Santander On Trial As Racing Gets Underway

Santander is on trial, with a rehearsal of the Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships that next year that will be held in the Cantabrian city.
The Test Event - Ciudad de Santander Trophy which is taking place from Monday 9 September until Sunday 15 September, is an International competition with a vast representation of competitors from the five continents, with ten Olympic events meeting up in the bay of Santander.

After the opening ceremony was celebrated on Sunday, the focus on Monday was on the technical side, with the race office, the accreditation office and the central office of control, as well as the press office working nonstop throughout the day.

The CEO of the Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championship, Mr.Rafael Munilla, as well as the technical director Ion Echave have a strict objective with all the officials in position and two racing courses in action on the opening day, Alpha and Charlie, the first one in front of the Sardinero and the second one towards the North of the Santa Marina Isle.

In the Finn class, the leader is the New Zealander Josh Junior with two points after two first place finishes. In second position is the Russian Terpigorev Egor, with four points.

The other classes entering are the two categories for 470, men and woman. Around 50 boats started the race in front of the Sardinero, giving a wonderful display for the city to contemplate.

In Men's 470, the British team Luke Patience and Joe Glanfield have the lead. In second place are Japan's Kazuto Doi and Kimihiko Imamura with Germany's Ferdinand Gerz and Patrick Follmann in third.

Austria's Lara Vadlau and Jolanta Ogar are well positioned in top spo followed by Americans Annie Haeger and Briana Provancha. The final podium spot at this early stage is taken by sisters Marjaliisa and Elise Umb from Estonia.

After seeing battles in the 470 and Finn class, tomorrow there will be more expectation with the entry of new classes in the racing course.

The Men's and Women's RS:X, the spectacular 49erFX and 49er and the new Olympic mixed multihull event, the Nacra 17 will all fight for the Ciudad de Santander Trophy.

Racing for the Men's and Women's 470 will continue in the Alpha area, the Finn class will continue in the Charlie area together with the Nacra 17 whilst the Men's and Women's RS:X will race in Delta area (in front of the beaches of Somo and Laredo).

The new entries of the 49er and 49er FX will also mean a new racing area Bravo in Cabo Mayor.

The Race Committee representing the different race areas will run two races, except the 49er and 49erFX that will hold three races on Tuesday with a maximum of 16 races scheduled.
