He then moved into the Flying Dutchman and he reprerented Italy at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics. After Olympic sailing, he developed a love of racing offshore, including the 3/4 Ton Cup 1/2 Ton Cup and 1 Ton Cup, often racing with Paul Elvstrom, who was a mentor to him. |It was a natural step to become involved in the America's Cup, and in 1987 I was appointed CEO of Italia, going on to be involved in the 2001 Luna Rossa campaign, and President for the 2004 and 2007 Luna Rossa Challenges. A key part of my role was securing sponsors, and managing their ongoing involvement in our projects. The Volvo Ocean race has also been close to my heart, and I managed Giovanni Solidini's campaign, but despite raising EUR6.5 million, we were unable to meet the required budget to compete in the Volvo Ocean Race.|
