Competitors Waiting for Wind

IFCA Freewave World Championship 2004
Guincho

Over 30 competitors representing eleven countries and three continents have registered at Guincho Beach in Portugal for the 2004 Freewave World Championships.
Competition Director, Bruno DE WANNEMAEKER, addressed the sailors' briefing yesterday morning at 10.00am - and introduced the event committee and judges. Bruno emphasised the importance of "overall impression" -judges will be looking at the "show" presented by the competitors, and the range and variety of skills presented. In good wave conditions the priority will be directed towards wave riding skills, and on flatter water freestyle manoeuvres will prevail!

Josh ANGULO commented "Surf's looking good, there is a positive forecast. In the meantime I am enjoying the great Portuguese hospitality."

The sailors are now on hold. We have waves, over a 100 surfers on the water, but are waiting for the wind.

On a day without wind, but good waves, sailors took to the water to hone their surfing skills. Most of the competitors have brought their surfboards with them, and after the sailors' briefing this morning, decided to make the most of the low tide peaks that were breaking perfectly on Guincho beach.

Talking point of the morning for some well equipped sailors was "what equipment to register for the Championships?" IFCA Rules limit sailors to registering just two boards and four sails, deadline for registration of equipment being the published 'first possible start' for competition. Once this first obstacle was tackled sailors could relax!

John SKYE (GBR 57), UK Wave and Triple Crown Champion, commented, "now I can enjoy the surf, and the chicks on the beach!"

The championship resumes on Thursday, with a sailors' briefing at 11.00 am.
