Day One

Lightning Youth World Championship
Sao Paulo

Racing started yesterday for the youth section of this popular three person class at their World Championship. Sailed out of Sao Paulo, with racing being held on Guarapiranga Lake, two races were sailed yesterday.
Competitors from seven nations and four continents are competing in this biennial event and competition is tight. The first race went to Brazilian sailors Marcelo BELLOTTI, Alejandro CARRI and Eduardo MOLINA. Thomas SUMNER, Mark PINEDA and Felipe BRITO, also from Brazil – completed the home nation’s dominance early in the day.

In race two, the top two Brazilian boats simply swopped places. Sumner, World Youth Champion in the class in 2002 in USA finished first, followed by Bellotti.

The final results of the day depended on a protest involving the Robert RAMIREZ (USA) and Christos MAVRIDIS (GRE). By now, Tommy and Bellotti are sharing the first place with three points with Ramirez in third with eight points.
