Ditmarsch explained. "New to the IMS class, we found our certificates fairly complex. After Hamilton we were discussing some possible changes to the boats configuration and pulled out the certificate to see if we could understand what effect the changes might have on our rating.

One of the guys, who has much more knowledge of the IMS system, queried one of the numbers. We compared it to the actual boat data and realised there was a wrong number on our certificate.

We soon figured out that we had not really won at Hamilton. As we both believe that it's important that the true winner receive the recognition they deserve we spoke to both Terry Mullens from Sting and Michael Spies from P&O NedLloyd.
We immediately wrote to Warwick Hoban the Hamilton Island Regatta Director advising him that the Magic Carpet had raced in the IMS class at Hahn Premium Race Week 2002 using a rating certificate, which contained a 'material error'.
We asked that the boat be withdrawn from the IMS results for the entire regatta, and we are now in the process of arranging for Magic Carpet's trophies to be returned so they can be sent to the correct recipients."

Race Director Warwick Hoban explained that in the re-calculated results, Sting (Terry Mullens) moves from third to first overall, while P&O Ned Lloyd (David Beak & Michael Spies) stays in second place. This has come about because the scoring system gives a bonus point for the winner of each race, and this allows Sting, who originally finished one point behind P&O Ned Lloyd to end up one point ahead. Zoe (Wayne Millar) moves from fourth to third.
