First Day of Finals Get Underway.

470 World Championship & Olympic Qualification
Cagliari, Sardinia

Yesterday marked the first day of the final series of racing at the 470 world championships, although it was a rather delayed start to racing.
The competitors were greeted with a very light breeze first thing in the morning resulting in the racing being postponed.

Racing finally got underway at 1500 hours in a shifty 8-14 knots of breeze. In the men's fleet Nathan Wilmot/Malcom Page (AUS) sailed the most consistent day, scoring a fifth and a second place, which was enough to disrupt the pecking order and positioned them in first place overall with Simon Cooke/Peter Nicholas (NZL) in second place.

Nick Rogers/Joe Glanfield (GBR) scored a fifteenth and a thirteenth in the tricky conditions, but it was enough to keep their names on the medal board, but points are close as Gideon Kliger/Udi Gal (ISR) are also on 33 points in fourth place.

In the women's fleet, Sofia Bekatorou/Emilia Tsoulfa (GRE) extended their lead on the fleet, scoring a fourth and a first place to now count six first places in their score line. Lisa Westerhof/Margriet Matthijiss (NED) still hold onto second place overall with Vlada Ilienko/Diana Krutskih (RUS) in third place.

There is however a long way to go, the competitors still have three days of racing left to decide who will take home the title of 470 world champion.
