Singapore's sports minister Vivian Balakrishnan has taken advantage of twitter to keep up with the action on the first day of sailing action at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.
A twitter boat is tracking the racing at the National Sailing Centre, holding a group of reporters tweeting on events to a global audience.

"It is a very good way for people back on shore and indeed all around the world to keep track of the racing in real time," said Balakrishnan.

"The Youth Olympic Games is a wonderful place to try out new technology and that is the sweet spot we are trying to hit."

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean also watched racing on the opening day of competition.

"Sailing should be more popular in Singapore than it is," he said. "We're trying to encourage more young people to take it up."

IOC Members Nawal El Moutawakel (MAR) and Nicole Hoevertsz (ARU) were joined on the jetty by IOC vice president and Singapore 2010 Organising Committee Chairman Ng Ser Miang.

"I am not quite savvy with twitter yet, but I am going to try because I want to keep up with the racing," he said. "This is the games for youth so we are trying to communicate on their wavelength."
