Day 1 – Races 1 and 2

Mirror World Championship
Howth

The first day of the Mirror World Championships at Howth Yacht Club, Dublin, was a good one for the Irish, with local boats filling the top three places in each of the two races sailed.
Peter Bayly and William Atkinson of Lough Derg YC lead the 92-boat fleet overall after a 2nd place in Race 1 and an even more impressive performance to win Race 2.

Skerries pair Ian McGonigle and Simon Glynn won the first race, sailed over an Olympic course in light westerly winds, from Bayly/Atkinson with Nick Meadow/Sam Trott of Carrickfergus SC 3rd.

The wind backed to the South and freshened for the second race on a windward-leeward course. Bayly/Atkinson dominated from the start and increased their lead over the fleet on every leg of the course.

Howth’s own Ian McSweeney and Katie Jones finished fourth in the second race, bringing back memories for Ian, who finished fourth in the second race when crewing for Emma McDonald in the Mirror Worlds a few years ago in Canada!
