International Women Match Race Criterium 2009
Calpe, Spain

French World Champion Claire LEROY continued her winning form from the ISAF Nations Cup Grand Final by scoring victory at the ISAF Grade 1 International Women's Match Race Criterium held in Calpe, Spain.
Organized by the Real Club Náutico Calpe, the XI International Women's Match Race Criterium started with a very complicated weather conditions that resulted in a busy few days for the breakdown service on water.

After the round robin the overall leader was Lucy MACGREGOR (GBR), tied on a 9-2 record with Claire LEROY (FRA) and followed by Silke HAHLBROCK (GER) on 8-3 and Katie SPITHILL (AUS) on 7-4. The other four skippers to get the quarter finals were Sweden’s Anna KJELLBERG on 6-5 and French skipper Julie BOSSARD, Spain’s Margarita CAMESELLE and Denmark’s Lotte MELDGAARD PEDERSEN all on 5-6 records.

There were high expectations for the quarter-final round on the third racing day. LEROY and SPITHILL scored clear 2-0 wins over their respective opponents, CAMESELLE and KJELLBERG. On the other hand, MELDAGAARD PEDERSON, who had struggled during the opening two days, (eightth position in the round robin) defeated the leading skipper MACGREGOR 2-1. There was also an upset in the other quarter final where BOSSARD defeated HAHLBROCK, the winner here in Calpe last year.

The final day of racing brought almost opposite conditions; light winds and sun. Only three of the scheduled semi-final matches and a round robin to decide places five to eight could be sailed. After that the wind disappeared completely from Calpe Bay and the Race Committee decided to abandon the remaining matches. LEROY and MELDAGAARD PEDERSON did complete their semi-final, with LEROY winning 3-1, whilst SPITHILL and BOSSARD remained tied on 2-2 win apiece. With the rest of racing abandoned, overall results were decided on countback, with the title going to LEROY, followed by SPITHILL and then BOSSARD.
