No ALT tag specified1. IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championship, 2007, Single-Person, Two-Person, Three-Person Keelboat, Rochester, New York, USA, 7-15 September

The hosts were the star performers winning two gold and two silver medals when the IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championships came to a conclusion in Rochester, USA. Karen MITCHELL and JP CREIGNOU (USA) won gold in the SKUD18 whilst Rick DOERR, Tim ANGLE and Bill DONAHUE (USA) took the title in the Sonar. Paralympic gold medallist Damien SEGUIN (FRA) was a runaway winner in the 2.4mR.

SEGUIN dominated the competition all week long and ended as he began with a bullet in the final race. Nobody came close to the Frenchman and he ended up taking victory by 22 points. Defending champion Heiko KROEGER (GER) battled back from an awful start to clinch the silver medal in the final race ahead of Thierry SCHMITTER (NED).

It was the first time that the SKUD18s have competed at the IFDS Worlds and it was the US competitors who dominated in the 18-strong fleet. MITCHELL and CREIGNOU were hardly out of the top three all week long and ended up taking the title with a race to spare. Nick SCANDONE and Maureen MCKINNON (USA) could not match the consistency of their team mates but had a fantastic finish to the regatta. Five bullets in the final six races lifted them up the leader board to the silver medal position. Sweden’s Carl-Gustaf FRESK and Annika LINDGREN won the bronze, edging out Scott WITMAN and Julia DORSETT (USA) on count back.

The battle in the Sonar fleet went down to the wire, with DOERR, ANGLE and DONAHUE (USA) going into the race level on points with Jens KROKER, Tobias SCHUETZ and Sigi MAINKA (GER). The Americans finished the series very strongly after a run of 1,5,1,1,3 scores, whilst the Germans had seen their lead evaporate as they posted a ninth in the previous race. This trend continued with DOERR, ANGLE and DONAHUE coming in seventh to take the title, whilst KROKER’s German team were tenth and dropped down to third overall. Paul CALLAHAN, Tom BROWN and Roger CLEWORTH (USA) won the race to move up into the silver medal position.

The IFDS would like to thank Rochester Yacht Club for hosting an outstanding World Championship. The sailors were united in their praise of the standard of regatta management, venue accessibility, successful racing and the welcoming spirit of the event organizers was unprecedented.

This event was noted as having the largest number of entrants in the three Paralympic classes and hosted:

Entries

  • Single-Person Keelboat (2.4mR), 45 Entries, 45 Athletes
  • Two-Person Keelboat (SKUD18), 18 Entries, 36 Athletes
  • Three-Person Keelboat (Sonar), 27 Entries, 81 Athletes

The varied wind conditions during the event provided exciting and challenging racing conditions for the 162 athletes and each class managed to complete an approximate 12 race series.

The IFDS would like to thank the IFDS Technical Delegate, Gene Hinkel; Regatta Chairmen, Tom ROTH and Keith BURHANS; Commodore, Skip SHUMWAY and their host of volunteers for organizing a wonderful event.
