Denmark, Finland and Spain took the remaining Women's Match Racing spots for the London 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition after coming through a tough qualification regatta.
Nine teams sailed at the Women's Match Racing International Country Olympic Qualifying Regatta in Miami, USA in an attempt to join Australia, France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Russia, Sweden and the USA on the start line at London 2012.
After the heartbreak of missing out on qualification at Perth 2011, Finland's Silja Lehtinen came into the regatta as favourite and brushed aside the competition with relative ease to win the regatta and qualify Finland.
Tamara Echegoyen (ESP) did enough to advance to the Final but lost 3-0 against Lehtinen, nonetheless qualification was assured for the Spaniard.
The race for the final qualification spot was between Lotte Meldgaard Pedersen (DEN) and Martina Silva (ARG) in the Petit Final.
Denmark took an early 2-0 lead in the best of five series, but Argentina fought back with two wins to force a thrilling winner takes all final race. In the final race, Denmark had a great start and led most of the race until 300 meters from the finish when the Argentinian's were able to steal the wind from the Danes. The Danes stayed just enough in control until it was time to gybe for the finish and were able to hang on for the win.
