From the record 271 entrants at this year's Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship in Weymouth, Great Britain.
Twenty-five youngsters will line up from some of sailing's developing nations thanks to support from the ISAF Athlete Participation Programme.
From 12-21 July, the world's top young sailing talent will descend on the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy for a battle royal on the waters which will host the 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition.
Amongst the record breaking 62 nations to be represented, 17 of them will be receiving funding from the ISAF Athlete Participation Programme (APP) to assist them with event and travel expenses. Amongst those 17 nations Gregory DOUGLAS will be the first ever sailor from Barbados at the Youth Worlds, whilst Colombia, Cuba, El Salvador, Jamaica and Pakistan will all be making their second ever appearance.
More Than A Competition
The Youth Worlds honours list reads like a who's who of sailing stars, with past winners including Russell COUTTS (NZL), Robert SCHEIDT (BRA), Alessandra SENSINI (ITA), Chris DICKSON (NZL) and Ben AINSLIE (GBR). Amongst the gold medallists last year, Paige RAILEY (USA) went on to win the Laser Radial World title, whilst Blanca MANCHON recently scooped the first ever RS:X European title. However, whilst the Youth Worlds is a hotbed of sailing talent, it also provides sailors from smaller nations a great first taste of major competition and a fantastic opportunity to learn from some of the best in the business.
The World Youth Sailing Trust will be funding the appointment of Jim SALTONSTALL as the Championship coach, and this year the Royal Yachting Association will be providing two additional coaches, meaning each course area will be covered by an individual coach.
At the end of each day the coaches give a debrief to the sailors, and by the end of the Championship the coaches regularly see rapid improvements amongst the talented youngsters.
By helping new nations and new sailors to attend, the Youth Worlds experience is spread as far around the globe as possible. In this way, not only is the Youth Worlds a fascinating glimpse at the sailing stars of the future, but it is also a dynamic force in the spreading the passion of sailing around the world. From Great Britain to Barbados, to Pakistan, to the Seychelles, to Cuba, Latvia, Cuba and beyond, the Youth Worlds brings a little of sailing's magic right throughout the world.
