There was one more race in both the open and women’s fleets at the 420 World Championship in Brest, France yesterday. Britain’s Jo BRIGG and Mary ROOK have taken a massive 21 points lead at the head of the women’s fleet, whilst Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship 2005 competitors Peter BURLING and Bruce KENNEDY (NZL) top the open leaderboard.
With the end of the qualifying series in the open competition the sailors were divided into gold and silver fleets to compete in the final series. Each team carries their final placing from the qualifying series over to the final series as their first race score. Therefore BURLING and KENNEDY, who finished fourth in the qualifying series, count their race one score as four and lead the open fleet after scoring a bullet in yesterday’s only race.
BURLING and KENNEDY are closely followed by Alfredo CAPODANNO and Vittorio PAPA (ITA) on six points after a third place yesterday, whilst Pablo SANTURDE and Abelardo QUEVEDO (ESP) are a further three points back in third. India’s Sanjeev CHAUHAN and Rajesh DHULAJI finished second in yesterday races, a result that lifts them to fourth overall.
Qualifying series winners Matt BURGE and Chris EVANS (GBR) were black flagged in yesterday’s race and consequently are way down in 20th. Over 20 boats were disqualified in yesterday’s race meaning a busy evening was in store for the protest committee.
Things were far more simple in the women’s fleet with a fourth place and the introduction of the discard putting BRIGG and ROOK well clear at the front. Second and third place Maria Stella TURIZIO and Maria Carolina RENDANO (ITA) and Delphine MACAIRE and Chloe GOUGEON (FRA) both had disappointing finishes yesterday put maintain their positions thanks to the discard. A fifth place for 2005 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Champions, Marie LUMEAU and Claire BOSSARD (FRA) moves them within two points of the podium positions.
