JOYON Claims New 24 Hour Speed Record
Francis JOYON (FRA) aboard the trimaran IDEC looks to have broken the eleven year old single-handed 24 hours distance run record by recording a distance of 543 nautical miles, subject to ratification by the World Sailing Speed Record Council (WSSRC).
The record, as ratified by the WSSRC, was set on 28-29 June 1994 by Laurent BOURGNON (FRA) onboard
Primagaz at 540.0nm at an average speed of 22.50 knots. BOURGNON recorded the time whilst on his record breaking single-handed run across the Atlantic, a record JOYON is currently aiming to break.
At 1500 hours UTC yesterday IDEC had covered 543 mile in the previous 24 hours at an average speed of 22.62 knots. With the massive trimaran still flying along this breaking of the record may not be the last.
To break BOURGNON’s single-handed transatlantic record of 7 days, 2 hours, 34 minutes and 42 seconds, JOYON must arrive at the Lizard, Great Britain before 11:16:08 UTC on 7 July.
