Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUE) give athletes the authorization to take a medication required to treat an illness or condition that happens to fall under the Prohibited List.

International Standard for Therapeutic Use Exemptions

The purpose of the International Standard for TUE (ISTUE) is to ensure that the process of granting TUEs is harmonized across sports and countries. Note that the ISTUE has been revised in response to direct consultation with stakeholders in addition to related comment from the World Anti-Doping Code (Code) revision process.

As a result of this collective feedback, there is now a revised version of the standard (ISTUE, January 2009) to come into effect on January 1, 2009. The revised ISTUE and a “Questions & Answers” regarding the revisions are available by clicking on the links below.
